Black women's contributions to American success is undeniable. I understand why mediocrity would be threatened when face to face with the mighty meritocracy of Black women.
They want you to believe that anyone with deep shades of melanin in their skin doesn't have the skills, ability or education to do their job. But the evidence proves otherwise at every turn. The facts are that many non-Black Americans are embarrassed to admit, with their 250-year headstart, Black women have caught up and surpassed expectations despite systematic barriers designed to impede progress.
There's a reason why Black women are the fastest-growing demographic of entrepreneurs - we've learned that building success on our own terms often provides the only pathway forward. America's foundation rests on Black women's contributions: from the agricultural expertise that built Southern wealth, to innovations like Dr. Patricia Bath's revolutionary cataract surgery techniques.
In education, Black women earn college degrees at higher rates than any demographic despite receiving less support. In business, they generate billions despite receiving less than 1% of venture capital. The civil rights movement would have collapsed without Ella Baker, Fannie Lou Hamer, and countless others who faced brutal repression while creating the blueprint for effective social change. In politics, healthcare, and community leadership, Black women have consistently provided the strategic vision and practical care that sustains this nation.
Without Black women's labour, innovation, and unwavering commitment to progress despite centuries of discrimination, America's economic and social systems would unquestionably collapse. The prosperity many take for granted was built through their undervalued contributions.
America owes Black women not just gratitude but its allegiance - a fundamental commitment to dismantling the barriers that have required such extraordinary resilience in the first place.
I hope you’ve all had a fruitful Women’s History Month.🫶🏾 AA✨
